Hurghada to Luxor Day Trip — Is It Worth It and How to Do It Right

Luxor is 4.5 hours from Hurghada by road and contains more ancient wonders per square kilometre than almost anywhere on earth. The Valley of the Kings, Karnak Temple, and Luxor Temple are UNESCO World Heritage Sites that have inspired travellers for 3,000 years. Here is everything you need to know about getting there and what to see.

Is a Luxor Day Trip From Hurghada Worth It?

Honest answer: a day trip is achievable but long. You will spend 9 hours in transit (4.5 hours each way) and have approximately 5–6 hours in Luxor. This is enough to see the main sites if you are efficient. However, most visitors who have done both a day trip and an overnight trip say the overnight is significantly better — you arrive rested, see sunrise at the temples, and are not rushing back to Hurghada. If time is your constraint, a day trip is worthwhile. If you have flexibility, stay overnight.

What to See in Luxor

Valley of the Kings: the necropolis of the New Kingdom pharaohs on Luxor's west bank. 63 tombs carved into limestone cliffs, including Tutankhamun's (additional ticket). The painted hieroglyphs and scenes are extraordinary and largely intact. Allow 2–3 hours. Karnak Temple Complex: the largest temple complex ever built — 33 centuries of construction by successive pharaohs. The Great Hypostyle Hall (134 massive columns) is one of the most awe-inspiring spaces in the world. Allow 1.5–2 hours. Hatshepsut's Mortuary Temple: the three-tiered temple of Egypt's most successful female pharaoh, built into the cliff face at Deir el Bahari. Striking architecture, well-preserved reliefs.

Transport Options

Minibus tour (most common): departs Hurghada 04:00–05:00, arrives Luxor by 08:30, returns by 22:00. Cost: £60–£100/person including transport, guide, and entrance fees. Private car: more flexible timing, higher cost (£150–£200 for car plus guide fees). Internal flight: Hurghada to Luxor (45 minutes, approximately £60–£100 return) — dramatically reduces travel time but requires booking in advance and airport logistics.

What to Bring

Comfortable walking shoes (you will walk 5–8km on uneven ancient stone). Long sleeves and long trousers or skirt (required for tomb and temple entry). Water (2+ litres — Luxor is significantly hotter than Hurghada). Hat. Cash in Egyptian pounds (entrance fees, tips, food). Camera (photography permitted in most areas without tripod). Small backpack.

Overnight vs Day Trip

The 4.5-hour return journey is the main constraint of a day trip. An overnight trip allows: visiting the Valley of the Kings at opening time (06:00) before crowds, seeing Karnak at both dawn and dusk (completely different atmospheres), adding Luxor Temple, visiting the Egyptian Antiquities Museum, and arriving back in Hurghada refreshed rather than exhausted. Cost for a quality overnight trip: £100–£180/person including hotel.
