Winter Weather in Hurghada — December to February Complete Guide

Hurghada winter is one of the world's great winter sun escapes — 22–24°C sunshine while the UK is grey and cold, a warm Red Sea, and world-class diving at its annual best. Here is everything you need to know.

Winter Temperature Reality

Hurghada's winter (December–February) is genuinely mild rather than hot: 22–24°C daytime, 14–16°C nights. The day temperature is comparable to a good UK summer day — warm enough for the beach and swimming, cool enough for comfortable active exploration. Evenings genuinely cool down — a light jacket or cardigan is needed after 18:00.

The Sea in Winter

The Red Sea in January and February sits at 22°C — the coolest of the year but still warm by any European standard. Most visitors swim and snorkel comfortably without a wetsuit. Cold-sensitive swimmers may prefer a 3mm shorty wetsuit for extended snorkelling sessions. The key advantage: the water is significantly warmer than anything available in European winter — including the Canary Islands (19°C in January).

Winter Diving

January and February offer Hurghada's best diving visibility — frequently 30m+ on offshore reefs as winter water clarity peaks. The combination of warm water (22°C) and extraordinary visibility makes these months the choice of serious divers. Liveaboard bookings for the northern Red Sea routes (Thistlegorm, Brothers Islands) are at their most competitive.

What to Pack for Winter

Light daytime clothing — shorts and t-shirts comfortable in the midday sun. A light jacket, fleece, or cardigan for evenings — essential, not optional. Swimwear year-round. Smart-casual for restaurant dinners. The key mistake to avoid: thinking you need heavy winter clothing. You do not — but a couple of evening layers makes a real difference to comfort.

Winter Season and Prices

Winter (December–April) is Hurghada's peak season — maximum hotel prices and maximum activity. February is the busiest and most expensive month. January offers comparable weather to February at slightly lower post-Christmas prices. Book 3–5 months in advance for winter stays at preferred properties.
